Grating Orientation Threshold

Grating orientation threshold is the smallest difference in the angle of two visual gratings that an observer can reliably detect, making it a behavioral measure of orientation discrimination and visual sensitivity. In a psychophysical task, participants view gratings with controlled spatial frequency, contrast, and orientation, then report whether their angles differ; performance across trials is used to estimate a threshold from a psychometric function. Researchers use this measure to characterize visual processing, compare perceptual abilities across conditions or populations, and assess how factors such as contrast, attention, development, or visual disorders influence orientation coding.

We describe a technique for inscribing identical fiber Bragg gratings into each core of a multicore fiber. This is achieved by introducing an additional surface into the optical path to mitigate lensing by the curved surface of the fiber cladding.

The measurement protocol and data analysis procedure are given for obtaining transverse coherence of a synchrotron radiation X-ray source along four directions simultaneously using a single 2-D checkerboard phase grating. This simple technique can be applied for complete transverse coherence characterization of X-ray sources and X-ray optics.

The Staircase Procedure for Finding a Perceptual Threshold

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Psychophysics is the name for a set of methods in perceptual psychology designed in order to relate the actual intensity of stimuli to their perceptual intensity. One important aspect of psychophysics involves the measurement of perceptual thresholds: How bright does a light need to be for a person to be able to detect it? How little pressure applied to the skin is detectable? How soft can a sound be and still be heard? Put...
