Motion Tracking Cameras

Motion tracking cameras are imaging systems that detect and record the movement of people, animals, or objects over time, providing quantitative data for behavioral analysis. They capture sequential frames and use image-processing algorithms to identify targets, follow changes in position, and calculate measures such as speed, distance, trajectory, and time spent in specific areas. In behavior research, these systems can monitor locomotion, social interactions, exploration, and responses to environmental or experimental conditions with minimal observer interference. The resulting spatial and temporal data support reproducible studies of animal behavior, motor performance, learning, and changes associated with development, disease, or treatment.

Using Eye-tracking to Assess the Relative Importance of Visual and Vestibular Input to Subcortical Motion Processing in the Roll Plane

2025

The methodology explored visual and vestibular contributions to gaze stabilization during optokinetic and whole-body rotations. Stimulations were carried out through visual, vestibular, and visuovestibular trials. Torsional eye-movement gain and nystagmus frequencies served as indicators for the subcortical relay of sensory-specific motion information towards the reflexive brainstem response for each trial.

This protocol describes how to build a small and versatile video camera, and how to use videos obtained from it to train a neural network to track the position of an animal inside operant conditioning chambers. This is a valuable complement to standard analyses of data logs obtained from operant conditioning tests.

We have developed a video-rate tracking microscope system that can record and quantify C. elegans behavior at high resolution and high speeds. We have also developed computational methods to reduce the dimensionality of the worm images to a fundamental set of measurements that completely describe the shape of the worm.

Source: Andrew Duffy, PhD, Department of Physics, Boston University, Boston, MA This experiment examines at various situations involving two interacting objects. First, the experiment examines the forces that two objects apply to one another while they collide. The objects are wheeled carts that have variable masses. The purpose of this experiment is to discover when the force the first cart exerts on the other is the same magnitude as the force the second cart exerts back on the first, as well...
