Motor Outcome Assessment

Motor outcome assessment is the systematic measurement of movement performance to determine how motor abilities change across development, disease, learning, or intervention. It uses standardized tasks and observable measures such as movement accuracy, speed, coordination, strength, range of motion, or successful task completion, often by comparing performance across time or conditions. In behavioral research, these assessments provide objective evidence of how neural, physical, or environmental factors influence action. They support the evaluation of rehabilitation programs, motor learning, neurological disorders, and experimental treatments while helping researchers identify meaningful changes in functional behavior.

Compound muscle action potential recording quantitatively assesses functional diaphragm innervation by phrenic motor neurons. Whole-mount diaphragm immunohistochemistry assesses morphological innervation at individual neuromuscular junctions. The goal of this protocol is to demonstrate how these two powerful methodologies can be used in various rodent models of spinal cord disease.
