Neutral Compartment Preference

Neutral compartment preference is a behavioral measure of an animal’s baseline choice for an unconditioned area within a multi-compartment testing apparatus. Researchers assess this preference by allowing the animal to move freely between compartments before pairing any compartment with a drug, reward, aversive stimulus, or other experimental condition, while recording time spent or entries in each area. These measurements identify innate side or compartment biases and help establish whether later changes reflect learning or motivation rather than preexisting preferences. The approach supports studies of conditioned place preference, reward processing, aversion, anxiety-related behavior, and experimental treatment effects.

2015

Ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) in mice differ depending on age, sex, condition, and genetic background. Using two ultrasound emitters broadcasting simultaneously in different locations, this two-choice test can evaluate murine recognition and preference responses to different characteristics of USVs.

Assays to Detect UV-reflecting Structures and Determine their Importance in Mate Preference using the Sailfin Molly Poecilia latipinna

Compartment Models: Two-Compartment Model

2025

The two-compartment model divides the body into central and peripheral compartments to account for varying blood perfusion rates among organs and tissues, affecting drug distribution. The central compartment includes blood and highly perfused tissues with rapid drug distribution, while the peripheral compartment contains tissues with slower drug distribution. After a single IV bolus dose, the drug concentration is high in plasma and low in tissues. The drug distribution between compartments...
