Rat Cognitive Testing

Rat cognitive testing is the systematic assessment of learning, memory, attention, decision-making, and related mental processes in rats through standardized behavioral tasks. Researchers measure how animals acquire rules, remember locations or cues, respond to delays, and adapt when task conditions change, using outcomes such as accuracy, response time, and perseverative errors. These tests can reveal how brain regions, neural circuits, genes, drugs, disease models, or environmental factors influence behavior. Because rats share fundamental learning and memory mechanisms with other mammals, cognitive testing supports research in neuroscience, psychology, pharmacology, and the development of treatments for neurological and psychiatric disorders.

Behavioral testing is the gold standard for determining outcomes following brain injury, and can identify the presence of developmental disabilities in infants and children. Neurodevelopmental reflexes are an early indicator of these abnormalities. A host of easily accomplished developmental reflex tests in the neonatal rodent were developed and described here.

An Introduction to Cognition

2023

Cognition encompasses mental processes such as memory, perception, decision-making reasoning and language. Cognitive scientists are using a combination of behavioral and neuropsychological techniques to investigate the underlying neural substrates of cognition. They are interested in understanding how information is perceived, processed and how does it affect the final execution of behaviors. With this knowledge, researchers hope to develop new treatments for individuals with cognitive...
