Soft Fabric Test

The Soft Fabric Test is a behavioral assay that examines how an organism responds to a soft textile stimulus, providing a simple way to assess tactile preference and material-directed behavior. During the test, the subject encounters soft fabric under controlled conditions, and researchers record measures such as approach, contact, time spent nearby, or preference relative to a comparison stimulus. These observations can help characterize sensory processing, comfort-seeking, motivation, and behavioral changes associated with experience or experimental treatment. Because responses may vary with species, context, and test design, the assay supports controlled studies of behavior and the factors that shape interactions with physical environments.

2015

This paper describes the design and fabrication of a soft unit for surgical manipulators. The base module includes three flexible fluidic actuators to achieve omnidirectional bending and elongation, and a granular jamming-based mechanism to enable stiffness control. A complete mechanical characterization is also reported.

Soft Lithography

2023

Many BioMEM devices, such as microfluidic channels, are fabricated using the soft lithography technique. Here, a microscale pattern is replicated by curing an elastomeric polymer over the 3D structure. These polymeric structures are then used to create a wide range of devices, ranging from microfluidic channels for biosensing applications to microscale bioreactors for the visualization of micro-colonies. This video introduces photolithography and demonstrates the technique in the laboratory.

Experimental Implementation of a New Composite Fabrication Method: Exposing Bare Fibers on the Composite Surface by the Soft Layer Method

A protocol to expose bare fibers on the composite surface by eliminating resin rich area is presented. The fibers are exposed during fabrication of the composites, not by the post surface treatment. The exposed carbon composites exhibit high electrical conductivity in the through-thickness direction and high mechanical property.

This protocol describes a rod-based approach, combining 3D-printing and soft lithography techniques for fabricating the soft gripper devices. This approach eliminates the need for an external air source by incorporating a chamber component and reduces the chance of occlusion during the sealing process, particularly for miniaturized pneumatic channels.
