Adolescent Female Mice

Adolescent female mice are juvenile female rodents undergoing rapid brain, hormonal, and behavioral development, making them an important model for studying behavior across maturation. During this period, changing ovarian hormone activity interacts with neural circuits involved in learning, social interaction, stress responses, and motivation, producing age- and sex-dependent behavioral patterns. Researchers use behavioral assays with adolescent female mice to examine development, environmental influences, psychiatric disease risk, and responses to pharmacological or genetic manipulations. Findings from these models can clarify how biological sex and developmental stage shape behavior and help identify mechanisms relevant to human adolescent health.

We developed an accelerated social defeat stress model for adolescent C57BL/6 mice, which works in both males and females and allows exposure during discrete adolescent periods. Exposure to this model induces social avoidance, but only in a subset of defeated male and female mice.

Establishment of a Urinary Tract Infection Model in Female Mice

2025

This video demonstrates the establishment of uropathogenic Escherichia coli infection in a female mouse bladder through transurethral catheter instillation. The injected bacteria successfully establish a urinary tract infection within the bladder, providing a valuable platform for studying healthcare-associated diseases related to the urinary tract.

Here, we present a protocol that provoked cortisol reactivity in a vulnerable adolescent Mexican American sample utilizing a modified version of the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). Saliva samples were collected at baseline, 15, 30, and 45 min post-TSST onset. Future research could utilize this modified TSST with vulnerable youth.
