Stimulus Timing Control

Stimulus timing control is the deliberate regulation of when environmental cues appear, change, or end during behavioral research and testing. By specifying stimulus onset, duration, offset, and intervals between events, researchers control the temporal relations that guide behavior and can distinguish responses to a cue from responses to its timing or sequence. This control supports precise measurement of learning, attention, discrimination, and response timing, while improving experimental consistency and reproducibility. In behavioral studies, carefully timed stimuli help reveal how organisms detect temporal patterns, form associations, and adjust actions to changing environmental conditions.

Eye Movements in Visual Duration Perception: Disentangling Stimulus from Time in Predecisional Processes

2024

We present a protocol that employs eye tracking to monitor eye movements during an interval comparison (duration perception) task based on visual events. The aim is to provide a preliminary guide to separate oculomotor responses to duration perception tasks (comparison or discrimination of time intervals) from responses to the stimulus itself.

Inducing Axonal Varicosities with a Micromechanical Stimulus on Neurons

2025

This video demonstrates the induction of axonal varicosities by applying micromechanical stimulus on neurons. The system comprises a micropipette attached to a syringe containing buffer via tubing. Using a micromanipulator, the micropipette is positioned above the neurons. Fluid pressure is then applied to induce varicosities in axons.

Time-Domain Interpretation of PD Control

2024

Proportional-Derivative (PD) control is a widely used control method in various engineering systems to enhance stability and performance. In a system with only proportional control, common issues include high maximum overshoot and oscillation, observed in both the error signal and its rate of change. This behavior can be divided into three distinct phases: initial overshoot, subsequent undershoot, and gradual stabilization. Consider the example of control of motor torque. Initially, a positive...

The 5-Choice Serial Reaction Time Task: A Task of Attention and Impulse Control for Rodents

2014

This protocol describes the 5-choice serial reaction time task, which is an operant based task used to study attention and impulse control in rodents. Test day challenges, which are modifications of the standard task, increase flexibility of the task and can be combined with other manipulations to more fully characterize behavior.
