Lever Press Training

Lever press training is a behavioral conditioning procedure in which an animal learns to press a lever to produce a consequence, making it a standard model for studying operant learning. Training typically begins with shaping, in which successive approximations to the target response are reinforced, then progresses to a defined reinforcement schedule such as continuous reinforcement or a fixed-ratio schedule. Researchers use this method to measure response acquisition, motivation, learning rate, and the effects of drugs or neural manipulations, providing a controlled framework for investigating how consequences influence behavior.

Here, we present a protocol to elicit Pavlovian conditioned approach behavior in rats. This procedure can be used to measure individual differences in the tendency to approach and attribute incentive salience to reward-related cues and investigate addiction vulnerability.

A Method for Evaluating the Reinforcing Properties of Ethanol in Rats without Water Deprivation, Saccharin Fading or Extended Access Training

2026

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. A Stepwise Approach to Training Proper training and competency in animal procedures are essential to ensure high standards of animal welfare and reliable scientific outcomes. A structured, progressive training approach is...
