Underrepresented Groups

Underrepresented groups are populations whose participation, visibility, or perspectives are disproportionately limited in a social, institutional, or research setting, making their inclusion important for accurately understanding behavior. In behavioral research, underrepresentation can arise when sampling frames, recruitment practices, language, accessibility, or measurement tools exclude or overlook certain populations, potentially making observed patterns less generalizable. Researchers address this issue through inclusive recruitment, culturally responsive measures, subgroup analysis, and transparent reporting of participant characteristics. These practices improve the validity and fairness of findings, clarify how social context shapes behavior, and help identify differences that broad samples may conceal.

Source: Laboratories of Dr. Ian Pepper and Dr. Charles Gerba - The University of Arizona Demonstrating Author: Luisa Ikner Traditional methods of analysis for microbial communities within soils have usually involved either cultural assays utilizing dilution and plating methodology on selective and differential media or direct count assays. Direct counts offer information about the total number of bacteria present, but give no information about the number or diversity of populations present...

A method for isolation of adherent inflammatory leukocytes from brain blood vessels of Plasmodium berghei ANKA-infected mice is described. The method allows quantification as well as phenotypic characterization of isolated leukocytes after staining with fluorescent antibodies and subsequent analysis by flow cytometry.

A Preclinical Mouse Model of Osteosarcoma to Define the Extracellular Vesicle-mediated Communication Between Tumor and Mesenchymal Stem Cells

Direct injection of cancer-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) leads to reprogramming of bone marrow supporting tumor progression; however, which cells mediate this effect is unclear. Herein, we describe a step-by-step protocol to investigate EV-mediated tumor-mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) interactions in vivo, revealing a crucial role for EV-educated MSCs in metastasis.
