Writing Disabilities Screening

Writing disabilities screening is a preliminary process for identifying students whose handwriting, spelling, written expression, or related behaviors may indicate difficulty with written language. It typically combines age-appropriate writing tasks with review of accuracy, fluency, legibility, organization, and observable behaviors such as avoidance, slow output, or frustration, while considering instructional and developmental factors. In behavior-focused settings, screening helps distinguish skill-based writing challenges from task refusal or disengagement and guides classroom supports or referral for comprehensive evaluation. Screening does not establish a diagnosis, but early identification can support targeted instruction, reduce academic stress, and improve progress monitoring.
