Zebrafish Personality

Zebrafish personality refers to consistent differences among individual zebrafish in behavioral tendencies, such as boldness, exploration, aggression, sociability, or responses to risk, that persist across time or situations and make behavior a useful biological trait to study. Researchers assess these patterns through repeated assays measuring movement, shelter use, shoaling, novel-environment responses, or reactions to threats, while separating stable tendencies from temporary effects of stress, learning, and experimental conditions. This framework connects observable behavior with nervous-system function, genetics, development, and environmental experience, supporting research in behavioral neuroscience, ecology, welfare, and disease models. It can also improve interpretation of drug and toxicity studies by accounting for individual variation rather than treating all fish as behaviorally identical.

Assessing the Influence of Personality on Sensitivity to Magnetic Fields in Zebrafish

We describe a behavioral protocol designed to assess how zebrafish’s personalities influence their response to water currents and weak magnetic fields. Fishes with the same personalities are separated based on their explorative behavior. Then, their rheotactic orientation behavior in a swimming tunnel with a low flow rate and under different magnetic conditions is observed.

In vivo Electroporation of Morpholinos into the Adult Zebrafish Retina

A method to conditionally knockdown a target protein’s expression in the adult zebrafish retina is described, which involves intravitreally injecting antisense morpholinos and electroporating them into the retina. The resulting protein is knocked down for several days, which allows testing the protein’s role in the regenerating or intact retina.

Nephrotoxin Microinjection in Zebrafish to Model Acute Kidney Injury

Renal injuries incurred from nephrotoxins, which include drugs ranging from antibiotics to chemotherapeutics, can result in complex disorders whose pathogenesis remains incompletely understood. This protocol demonstrates how zebrafish can be used for disease modeling of these conditions, which can be applied to the identification of renoprotective measures.

Personal Identity

Personal identity is the deeply felt sense of self that individuals cultivate over time, intricately woven from intrinsic qualities they consider essential to their existence—qualities such as morality, intelligence, and friendliness. These attributes serve as vital internal benchmarks, guiding individuals in evaluating whether their actions resonate with their true selves. When personal identity takes center stage in one's life, individuals often emphasize their distinctiveness, highlighting...
