Beta-amyloid Fibrinogen Interaction

The beta-amyloid fibrinogen interaction is a biochemical association between beta-amyloid peptides and fibrinogen, a blood plasma protein, that may contribute to vascular and clotting abnormalities in Alzheimer’s disease. When beta-amyloid binds fibrinogen, it alters fibrin formation and produces clots with an abnormal structure that are more resistant to breakdown by fibrinolytic enzymes. Studying this interaction helps explain how amyloid pathology may affect cerebral blood vessels and links molecular changes to impaired blood flow and inflammation. It also supports research into disease biomarkers and therapeutic strategies designed to prevent abnormal clot formation or restore fibrin clearance.

Transcellular protein interactions are important determinants of pancreatic beta-cell function. Detailed here is a method—adapted from a coculture model of synaptogenesis—for investigating how specific transmembrane proteins influence insulin secretion. Transfected HEK293 cells express proteins of interest; beta cells do not need to be transfected or otherwise directly perturbed.

Beta

2024

Beta is a crucial metric in finance used to assess an investment's risk and expected return relative to the overall market. It is calculated as the slope of the line in a scatterplot that compares the returns of an individual stock to the returns of the market benchmark, typically represented by a broad market index. Beta quantifies how much a stock's price moves in response to market movements, providing insight into its volatility and systematic risk. A beta of one indicates that the stock's...

Cell-mediated lymphocytotoxicity (CML) assays can be used to test autoreactive responses and study mechanisms of cell death in vitro. However, using live-cell confocal microscopic imaging techniques with fluorescent dyes, the type and kinetics of cell death as well as the pathways utilized can be studied in greater detail.

Imaging Amyloid-Beta Plaques in Brain Tissue Sections by Immunolabeling and Curcumin Staining

Source: Maiti, P. et. al.,. Labeling and Imaging of Amyloid Plaques in Brain Tissue Using the Natural Polyphenol Curcumin. J. Vis. Exp. (2019)This video demonstrates the imaging procedure of amyloid-beta plaques in brain tissue sections using immunolabeling and curcumin staining. Immunolabeling provides specificity for amyloid-beta, while curcumin selectively binds β-sheet-rich fibrils, enhancing visualization. The co-localization of red and green fluorescence confirms the presence of plaques.
