Brain Tissue Samples

Brain tissue samples are portions of brain collected and preserved for examining the cells, molecules, and structural features that underlie nervous-system function and disease. In biochemical analysis, researchers typically stabilize tissue soon after collection, homogenize it under controlled conditions, and separate or extract proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, metabolites, or enzymes for measurement; handling conditions help limit degradation and preserve native molecular states. These samples support studies of neurotransmitter metabolism, signaling pathways, gene and protein expression, neurodegeneration, and responses to injury or treatment. Careful sampling and documentation improve comparability across experiments and help connect molecular findings with brain anatomy and function.

A Hydrophobic Tissue Clearing Method for a Rat Brain Tissue Sample

2025

Source: Kirchner, K.N., et al., A Hydrophobic Tissue Clearing Method for Rat Brain Tissue. J. Vis. Exp. (2020).This video demonstrates the method of hydrophobic tissue clearing of a rat brain tissue sample. The sample is sequentially dehydrated in methanol, treated with a dichloromethane and methanol mixture to dissolve lipids and pigments, and transferred to dibenzyl ether for complete tissue clearing, enabling detailed imaging without thin sectioning.

Frozen Mouse Brain Tissue Sectioning: A Procedure to Obtain Thin Frozen Tissue Sections from Frozen Murine Brain Tissue

This manuscript describes a protocol that applies comprehensive profiling for analysis of transcriptional programs induced in specific brain nuclei of rodents following behavioral paradigms. Herein, this approach is illustrated in the context of profiling genes induced in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) of mice following acute cocaine exposure, utilizing microfluidic qPCR arrays.
