Anisotropic Tissue

Anisotropic tissue is biological tissue whose structural, mechanical, or transport properties vary with direction, a feature that enables specialized function in organs and engineered constructs. This behavior arises from organized components such as aligned cells, collagen fibers, or extracellular matrix, which guide force transmission, fluid movement, and cellular responses along preferred axes. In bioengineering, researchers characterize and reproduce tissue anisotropy using aligned biomaterials, patterned scaffolds, mechanical stimulation, and controlled fabrication methods. These approaches support the design of more physiologically relevant models, implants, and tissue-engineered constructs for studying load-bearing tissues such as muscle, tendon, cartilage, and cardiac tissue.
