Biological Stimulation

Biological stimulation is the deliberate application of physical, chemical, or biological cues to alter the activity, behavior, or function of living cells and tissues. In bioengineering, these cues act through mechanisms such as receptor-mediated signaling, ion-channel activation, and mechanically induced changes in cell shape and gene expression, with responses shaped by stimulus type, intensity, timing, and duration. Researchers use biological stimulation to guide cell proliferation, differentiation, migration, and tissue organization in engineered constructs and culture systems. The approach supports regenerative medicine, disease modeling, drug testing, and the development of responsive therapies and biomedical devices.

This video presents synthetic biology and its role in bioengineering. Synthetic biology refers to the methods used to genetically modify organisms in order to make them capable of producing large quantities of a product. This product could be a protein that the cell already makes or a new protein that has been encoded in a newly-inserted DNA sequence. Here, we discuss how an organism's genetic material is modified using transformation or transfection. Then, the process is shown in the...

What is Conservation Biology?

2019

Conservation biology is a scientific field that focuses on the preservation of biodiversity in order to protect ecosystems while meeting the needs of the human population. Humans require properly functioning ecosystems to maintain our supply of natural resources, including food, medicines, and building materials. Ecosystems also perform critical services, such as purifying our air and water. A large body of evidence indicates that such ecosystem services depend on biodiversity. Furthermore,...

In vivo Imaging of Biological Tissues with Combined Two-Photon Fluorescence and Stimulated Raman Scattering Microscopy

Stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) microscopy allows label-free imaging of biomolecules based on their intrinsic vibration of specific chemical bonds. In this protocol, the instrumental setup of an integrated SRS and two-photon fluorescence microscope is described to visualize cellular structures in the spinal cord of live mice.
