Biomaterials Bone Regeneration

Biomaterials for bone regeneration are engineered materials designed to support the repair or replacement of damaged bone, an important goal in bioengineering and regenerative medicine. These materials can provide a three-dimensional scaffold that guides cell attachment, proliferation, and new tissue formation while gradually degrading or integrating with surrounding bone; their physical structure, chemical composition, and biological signals influence this process. Applications include bone defect repair, implant coatings, and tissue-engineered grafts, where biomaterials may improve structural support and healing outcomes. Current research focuses on designing materials that better match native bone properties and coordinate mechanical stability with biological regeneration.

Overview of Biomaterials

2023

Biomaterials are materials engineered to interact favorably with biological organisms or molecules. These materials can be derived from or produced by an organism, or can even be a synthesized polymer. Engineers use these novel materials in a wide range of applications, such as tissue engineering, biosensing and drug delivery. This video introduces common biologically derived materials, and provides examples of common techniques used to process them. Key challenges in the field are discussed,...

Electrospinning of Silk Biomaterials

2023

Silk fibers have been processed and used to create fabrics and threads for centuries. However, the solubilizing of silk fibers, thereby turning it into a versatile pre-polymer solution is a much newer technology. Solubilized silk can be processed in many different ways to create a biocompatible material with controllable mechanical properties. This video introduces the processing of silk from silk worm cocoons, and shows how the silk solution can be used to create a fiber mat via...

2012

Human perivascular stem cells (PSCs) are a novel stem cell class for skeletal tissue regeneration similar to mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). PSCs can be isolated by FACS (fluorescence activated cell sorting) from adipose tissue procured during standard liposuction procedures, then combined with an osteoinductive scaffold to achieve bone formation in vivo.
