Embedded Micro Lenses

Embedded micro lenses are microscale optical elements formed within or integrated into a substrate, where they shape light for compact imaging, sensing, and illumination systems. Their curved interfaces and differences in refractive index focus, collimate, or redirect light as it passes through the surrounding material, while their small size enables precise optical control in confined devices. In bioengineering, embedded micro lenses can improve light collection in biosensors, microscopy platforms, lab-on-a-chip systems, and miniature diagnostic instruments. Integrating lenses directly into a device can reduce alignment requirements, support high-density optical architectures, and enhance measurements of cells, tissues, and biological analytes.

Current in vitro models for evaluating contact lenses (CLs) and other eye-related applications are severely limited. The presented ocular platform simulates physiological tear flow, tear volume, air exposure and mechanical wear. This system is highly versatile and can be applied to various in vitro analyses with CLs.

We developed protocols and designed a custom apparatus to enable embedding of millimeter-scale specimens. We present sample preparation procedures with an emphasis on embedding in acrylic resin and polyimide tubing to achieve rigid immobilization and long-term storage of specimens for the interrogation of tissue architecture and cell morphology by micro-CT.
