Fiber Features

Fiber features are the structural, physical, and chemical characteristics that determine how individual fibers and fiber networks perform in engineered biological systems. In bioengineering, properties such as fiber diameter, alignment, porosity, surface chemistry, and mechanical strength regulate fluid transport, cell adhesion, proliferation, and the transmission of physical forces. Researchers tune these features through material selection and fabrication methods, including electrospinning and controlled fiber assembly, to reproduce aspects of native extracellular matrix architecture. Characterizing fiber features supports the design of tissue-engineering scaffolds, wound dressings, drug-delivery systems, and other biomaterials with tailored biological responses and functional performance.

A protocol for the microfluidic spinning and microstructure characterization of regenerated silk fibroin monofilament is presented.

In Vivo Single-Fiber Recording of Sciatic Nerve C-Fibers in Rats

2025

This video demonstrates a single-fiber recording of C-fiber nerve conduction in rats. An anesthetized rat is incised to expose the sciatic nerve, which provides sensory and motor supply to the lower limbs. The individual C-fibers are then exposed. Electrical stimulation is provided using stimulus electrodes implanted in the foot, and a response is recorded from a single nerve fiber.

(2017) This video demonstrates the method for visualizing nerve-specific mitochondria using three-dimensional imaging. It outlines the process of acquiring sequential scans of pre-labeled intraepidermal nerve fibers and generating 3D surface images to isolate and display mitochondria in relation to nerve structures.

Visual Search for Features and Conjunctions

2023

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University How do people find objects in cluttered visual scenes? Think, for example, of looking for keys on a messy desk, finding the ripest-looking fruit at the grocery store, locating your car when you can’t quite remember where you parked it, or finding an old friend at an airport exit gate. Clearly, an understanding of visual perception is going to play a role in any answers, and more specifically, an understanding of visual attention...
