Tissue Visualization

Tissue visualization is the use of imaging and labeling methods to reveal the organization, composition, and function of tissues, making otherwise complex biological structures measurable. It works by preparing tissue samples, generating optical or molecular contrast, and capturing signals with microscopy or related imaging systems; serial images can then be combined to represent three-dimensional architecture. In bioengineering, these approaches help researchers evaluate cell distribution, scaffold structure, tissue maturation, and interactions between engineered constructs and host tissue. Quantitative visualization supports quality control, mechanism-focused studies, and the design of more functional tissues for regenerative medicine and disease modeling.

Source: Brown, A. O., et al. Visualization of Streptococcus pneumoniae within Cardiac Microlesions and Subsequent Cardiac Remodeling. J. Vis. Exp. (2015).This video demonstrates the microscopic visualization of bacterial microlesions in mouse heart tissue. The heart of a mouse infected with Streptococcus pneumoniae is harvested, washed, and fixed before being processed to obtain coronal sections. These sections are stained with hematoxylin and eosin and examined under a microscope to visualize...

The interrenal gland in zebrafish is the teleostean counterpart of the mammalian adrenal gland. This protocol introduces how to perform the 3-β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (Δ5-4 isomerase; 3β-Hsd) enzymatic activity assay, which detects differentiated steroidogenic cells in the developing zebrafish.
