Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm

An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a localized, persistent enlargement of the abdominal aorta caused by weakening of the vessel wall, and it matters because rupture can produce life-threatening internal bleeding. In AAA, inflammation, degradation of extracellular-matrix proteins, and loss of vascular smooth muscle cell function reduce wall strength, allowing blood pressure to drive progressive dilation. Biology research examines how genetics, aging, smoking, and other factors influence these cellular and molecular processes. Clinicians use ultrasound and computed tomography to detect and monitor aneurysms, while surgical or endovascular repair can prevent rupture when risk becomes substantial.

This video shows how to induce abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) in mice via transient intraluminal infusion of porcine pancreatic elastase into the infrarenal segment of the abdominal aorta. The model has the ability to add broad insight into the pathobiology of AAA due to the emergence of numerous transgenic and gene knockout mice.

2017

Polyurethane catheter insertion into the aortic lumen and suture ligation of the aorta induce chronic hypoxia due to hypoperfusion of the adventitial vasa vasorum. This article describes a novel animal model of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) with characteristics similar to those of AAA in humans.
