Agent Administration

Agent administration is the controlled delivery of a biological, chemical, or therapeutic agent to cells, tissues, or whole organisms for research or treatment. It works by selecting an appropriate route, dose, formulation, and timing to regulate how the agent enters the system, reaches its target, and produces a measurable response; absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion can all influence its effects. In biology, standardized administration supports studies of pharmacology, physiology, disease mechanisms, and treatment efficacy. Careful control of experimental conditions improves reproducibility, enables dose-response analysis, and helps researchers distinguish genuine biological effects from variation caused by delivery methods.

Compound Administration II

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN Compound administration is often an integral component of an animal study. Many factors need to be evaluated to ensure that the compound is delivered correctly. The route of administration affects the mechanisms of absorption. The characteristics of the substance to be introduced (the pH, viscosity, and concentration) may dictate which route of administration is selected.

A Novel Surgical Approach for Intratracheal Administration of Bioactive Agents in a Fetal Mouse Model

We developed a novel surgical approach for intratracheal administration of bioactive agents into the mouse fetus. The delivery route is more efficient in targeting the fetal mouse lungs than the commonly used intra-amniotic injection. This procedure has to date not been described in a mouse model.

Introducing Experimental Agents into the Mouse

Many investigations performed in mice (Mus musculus) require the administration of an experimental agent to the animal. For example, it may be of interest to test the efficacy of a specific therapy, to induce a pathologic condition, or to administer anesthesia or palliative care. In order to ensure safe and efficient delivery, it is important to consider a variety of factors prior to the administration of the treatment. This video, which reviews agent administration in the mouse, begins by...

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN There are many commonly used routes for compound administration in laboratory mice and rats. However, certain protocols may require the use of less commonly used routes, including intradermal, intranasal, and intracranial injections. Specialized training is essential for these procedures to be performed successfully. Justification for these routes may need to be provided to gain Institutional...

Self-administration Studies

Behavioral reinforcement induced by the rewarding feelings following substance use sometimes leads to addiction, which is demonstrated by increased self-administration. Drug self-administration studies in rodents model human behavior during drug abuse. These models are useful in understanding the neurobiological behavior of addiction in order to help scientists discover new treatments for drug dependence. This video reviews the concepts underlying self-administration studies. A general...
