Anatomical Feature Analysis

Anatomical feature analysis is the systematic study of body structures, their shapes, positions, and relationships, to understand how biological form supports function. It works by identifying and comparing features through methods such as direct observation, dissection, measurement, microscopy, or imaging, with attention to structural variation across individuals, tissues, or species. In biology, this approach helps researchers characterize organisms, interpret evolutionary adaptations, identify normal and abnormal structures, and connect anatomy with physiology, development, and behavior. Careful analysis also supports classification, comparative biology, medical education, and research on disease or injury.

Examination of Anatomical Features of Retinal Ganglion Cells Under N-methyl-D-aspartic Acid (NMDA)-induced Excitotoxicity

Here, we describe the use of a genetically directed alkaline phosphatase (AP) labeling method to investigate the anatomical features and phenotypes of mouse retinas under NMDA-induced excitotoxicity. In conjunction with several retinal ganglion cell (RGC) subtype-specific reporter lines, we uncover novel phenotypes in dying RGCs throughout the degenerative process.

An accurate and practical method to measure parameters like strain in myocardial tissue is of great clinical value, since it has been shown, that strain is a more sensitive and earlier marker for contractile dysfunction than the frequently used parameter EF.

Visual Search for Features and Conjunctions

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University How do people find objects in cluttered visual scenes? Think, for example, of looking for keys on a messy desk, finding the ripest-looking fruit at the grocery store, locating your car when you can’t quite remember where you parked it, or finding an old friend at an airport exit gate. Clearly, an understanding of visual perception is going to play a role in any answers, and more specifically, an understanding of visual attention...

Anatomical Positions

2023

In anatomy, several standard anatomical positions are used as references for describing the position and orientation of different body parts. These positions help provide a common frame of reference when discussing anatomical structures. The anatomical position is the standard reference point for describing the body's position and orientation. In this position: The body is upright, facing forward, and standing erect. The feet are parallel and flat on the floor. The arms are hanging by the...

Anatomical Terminology

2023

Knowledge of anatomy is essential to understand human biology and medicine. Anatomists and health care professionals use standard terminology to describe the human body with more precision and no ambiguity. Anatomical terms have mostly Greek and Latin-derived roots. Because these languages are rarely used in conversation, the meaning of words remains the same. Each term is made up of a root in between the prefixes and suffixes. The root of a term often refers to an organ, tissue, or condition,...
