Artificial Perfusate

Artificial perfusate is an engineered fluid used to circulate through organs, tissues, or biological models when natural blood is unavailable, enabling researchers to maintain physiological activity under controlled conditions. Its composition is formulated to support cellular requirements by delivering oxygen and nutrients, maintaining suitable pH and osmotic balance, and carrying away metabolic waste as it moves through vascular or tissue compartments. In biology, artificial perfusates support ex vivo organ preservation, isolated-organ experiments, transplantation research, and studies of tissue function. By separating perfusion from whole-body physiology, they help investigators examine organ responses, test interventions, and refine strategies for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

Natural Selection and Adaptive Evolution In natural settings, adaptive evolution takes place by natural selection, a process in which differences in traits lead to differences in survival and reproductive success between individuals. This happens because individuals with certain phenotypes have a higher probability of survival and/or produce more surviving offspring than individuals with other phenotypes. A classic example of this was demonstrated by Rosemary and Peter Grant studying the...

Observing Artificial Selection in Plants ExpandTo begin the experiment, collect five two-week old grown plants from the generation one population that appear healthy. Note: Plants should appear green, not wilted, and not have damaged leaves. Experimental Hypothesis: The experimental hypothesis for this lab might be that the number of lead trichomes varies naturally, but the average number will increase over generations if only plants with the highest number of trichomes are interbred or...

Antegrade Perfusion Model: An Ex Vivo Technique to Perfuse Isolated Mouse Heart

2025

This video describes an antegrade perfusion technique of an isolated mouse heart during which a perfusate is injected through the left ventricle, and eventually, it perfuses the entire myocardium. This method can be used to isolate cardiomyocytes from murine models and generate decellularized hearts for further downstream applications.
