Beneficial Bacteria

Beneficial bacteria are microorganisms that support the health of hosts, ecosystems, or industrial processes, making them important subjects in biology and microbiology. They act through processes such as nutrient cycling, fermentation, production of antimicrobial compounds, and competition with harmful microbes for resources and attachment sites; in animal microbiomes, some also interact with host tissues and influence immune function. These bacteria contribute to digestion, soil fertility, food production, wastewater treatment, and probiotic research. Understanding their diversity, metabolic activities, and relationships with other organisms helps researchers assess microbiome health and develop applications in medicine, agriculture, and environmental biotechnology.

Evaluating the Effect of Beneficial Bacteria on Gut Microbial Translocation in Heat-Stressed Rats

Source: Sorokulova, I., et al. Prevention of Heat Stress Adverse Effects in Rats by Bacillus subtilis Strain. J. Vis. Exp. (2016)This video demonstrates rats pre-treated with beneficial bacteria or phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and exposed to heat stress to evaluate gut barrier integrity. Fewer gut-derived bacterial colonies from the liver of treated rats, in contrast to numerous colonies in control rats, indicate an intact epithelial barrier and minimal bacterial translocation.

Root-Mediated Endophytic Colonization of Beneficial Bacteria in Rice

Begin with rice seedlings pre-germinated under dark, aseptic conditions to ensure uniform sprouting.Transfer these seedlings to a flask containing a nutrient-rich, semi-solid medium pre-inoculated with a test bacterium. As the plant grows, the roots release chemotactic compounds into the surrounding medium. These compounds stimulate bacterial proliferation, leading to adhesion, multiplication, and colony formation on the root surface. As the roots develop, the bacteria enter the plant through...

Current treatments of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) aim at alleviating disease symptoms but may cause severe side effects. Thus, alternative strategies are being investigated in animal colitis models. Here, we explain how the beneficial effects of diet supplements on clinical IBD signs are analyzed in such a colitis model.

Culturing and Enumerating Bacteria from Soil Samples

Source: Laboratories of Dr. Ian Pepper and Dr. Charles Gerba - The University of Arizona Demonstrating Authors: Bradley Schmitz and Luisa Ikner Surface soils are a heterogeneous mixture of inorganic and organic particles that combine together to form secondary aggregates. Within and between the aggregates are voids or pores that visually contain both air and water. These conditions create an ideal ecosystem for bacteria, so all soils contain vast populations of bacteria, usually over 1 million...

Detection of Bacteria Using Fluorogenic DNAzymes

2012

We have recently reported a novel approach for generating fluorogenic DNAzyme probes that can be applied to set up a simple, "mix-and-read" fluorescent assay for bacterial detection. These special DNA probes catalyze the cleavage of a chromophore-modified DNA-RNA chimeric substrate in the presence of crude extracellular mixture (CEM) produced by a specific bacterium, thereby translating bacterial detection into fluorescence signal generation. In this report we will describe key experimental...
