Brain Toxin Clearance

Brain toxin clearance is the set of processes that remove metabolic waste, excess proteins, and potentially harmful compounds from nervous tissue, helping preserve neuronal function. It depends on the blood-brain barrier, cerebrospinal fluid circulation, and the glymphatic system, in which fluid moves through perivascular spaces and astrocyte-supported pathways to transport waste toward drainage routes. Cellular uptake, enzymatic breakdown, and transport across vascular or meningeal interfaces further regulate clearance, while sleep and changes in blood flow can influence fluid movement. Studying these mechanisms supports research into neurodegenerative disease, brain injury, drug delivery, and strategies for maintaining brain homeostasis.

Analyzing the Glutamate Release and Clearance at a Single Neuron Synapse in a Mouse Brain Slice

This video demonstrates evaluating glutamate release and clearance at single corticostriatal synapses in a mouse brain slice. Electrical stimulation facilitates glutamate release at the synapse. The released glutamate alters sensor protein's fluorescence, which decays over time, indicating release and clearance efficiency.

Bacterial Toxins

2026

Bacterial toxins are sophisticated virulence factors that enable pathogenic bacteria to interact with, invade, and damage host tissues. These toxins fall broadly into two types: protein exotoxins, which are secreted into the environment and target specific host receptors, and lipopolysaccharide endotoxins, which are structural components of the bacterial outer membrane released primarily during bacterial lysis or membrane shedding. Exotoxins generally act more selectively, binding to cell...

Humans continually engage with an environment rich in potentially harmful chemicals. These are introduced to our bodies through inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact. These chemicals exist in various forms, such as air and environmental pollutants, agricultural chemicals, organic solvents, and heavy metals. Air pollutants, primarily gases, pose significant threats to respiratory health, leading to conditions like hypoxia, lung cancer, and in extreme cases, death. Environmental pollutants like...

Hepatic Drug Clearance: Restrictive and Nonrestrictive Clearance

2025

Hepatic clearance refers to the volume of blood cleared of a drug by the liver per unit of time. It plays a crucial role in drug metabolism and elimination. While hepatic clearance is commonly estimated by subtracting renal clearance from total body clearance, other pathways, such as pulmonary or biliary clearance, may also contribute. However, these pathways are generally less significant than hepatic and renal clearance. Most drugs undergo restrictive clearance, which is proportional to the...
