C Elegans Males

C. elegans males are the male sex of the model nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, an organism widely used to study genetics, development, and behavior. They usually carry a single X chromosome (XO), whereas XX individuals develop as self-fertilizing hermaphrodites; sex is determined through X-chromosome dosage and related regulatory pathways. Males produce sperm and locate hermaphrodites for mating, enabling cross-fertilization and the introduction or maintenance of distinct genetic backgrounds. Studying male anatomy, mating behavior, fertility, and sex-specific gene function helps researchers investigate reproductive biology, neural circuits, evolution, and how biological sex shapes development and physiology.

Nematodes can be propagated easily in the lab--in part because hermaphrodites can reproduce by self-fertilization. However, genetic crosses and other experiments may require a large number of males. This video describes a method to enrich for male C. elegans.

The easiness of maintaining and propagating the nematode C. elegans make it a nice model organism to work with. The possibility of synchronizing worms allows the work with a significant amount of subjects at the same developmental stage, what facilitates the study of one particular process in many animals.

2023

Ceanorhabditis elegans is a powerful tool to help understand how organisms develop from a single cell into a vast interconnected array of functioning tissues. Early work in C. elegans traced the complete cell lineage and structure at the electron microscopy level, allowing researchers unprecedented insight into the connection between genes, development and disease. Appreciating the stereotyped development and reproductive program of C. elegans is essential to using this model organism to its...

An Introduction to Caenorhabditis elegans

2023

Caenorhabditis elegans is a microscopic, soil-dwelling roundworm that has been powerfully used as a model organism since the early 1970’s. It was initially proposed as a model for developmental biology because of its invariant body plan, ease of genetic manipulation and low cost of maintenance. Since then C. elegans has rapidly grown in popularity and is now utilized in numerous research endeavors, from studying the forces at work during locomotion to studies of neural circuitry.
