Calcium Particles

Calcium particles are microscopic or nanoscale materials containing calcium salts, studied for their roles in biomineralization, cell interactions, and biomedical design. Their behavior depends on composition, size, surface chemistry, and solubility: particles can dissolve to release calcium ions, provide surfaces for mineral formation, or be taken up by cells through endocytosis. In biology, these properties help researchers examine how calcium supports bone and tooth development, regulates local mineral deposition, and influences cellular responses. Calcium particles are also investigated as components of biomaterials and delivery systems, where controlled ion release and biodegradability may support tissue repair and other regenerative applications.

Subatomic Particles

Dalton was only partially correct about the particles that make up matter. All matter is composed of atoms, and atoms are composed of three smaller subatomic particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons. These three particles account for the mass and the charge of an atom. The Discovery of the Electron The first clue about the subatomic structure came at the end of the 19th century when J.J. Thomson discovered the electron using a cathode ray tube. This apparatus consisted of a sealed glass...

Calcium Imaging in Neurons

Calcium ions play an integral role in neuron function: They act as intracellular signals that can elicit responses such as altered gene expression and neurotransmitter release from synaptic vesicles. Within the cell, calcium concentration is highly dynamic due to the presence of pumps that selectively transport these ions in response to a variety of signals. Calcium imaging takes advantage of intracellular calcium flux to directly visualize calcium signaling in living neurons. This video begins...

2025

This video analyzes T-cell receptor-induced calcium influx in T-cells. Anti-CD3 antibodies activate the T-cell signaling pathways, leading to an increase in intracellular calcium ions that bind with Indo-1 dye. In flow cytometry, a spectrum shift from the calcium-free state to the calcium-bound state correlates with T-cell receptor-induced calcium influx.
