Cardiomyocyte Yield

Cardiomyocyte yield is the quantity or proportion of cardiomyocytes obtained from a biological sample, differentiation procedure, or cell culture, and it is a key measure of experimental efficiency and reproducibility. In cardiac cell production, yield depends on processes such as stem cell expansion, directed differentiation, cell survival, and purification, which determine how many cells acquire cardiomyocyte identity relative to the starting population. Researchers use cardiomyocyte yield to evaluate culture conditions, compare differentiation methods, and optimize the production of functional heart cells for disease modeling, drug screening, tissue engineering, and regenerative biology. Reliable yield measurements also support consistent interpretation of cardiac development and therapeutic studies.

ATP Yield

2019

Cellular respiration produces 30 - 32 ATP per glucose molecule. Although most of the ATP results from oxidative phosphorylation and the electron transport chain (ETC), 4 ATP are gained beforehand (2 from glycolysis and 2 from the citric acid cycle). The ETC is embedded in the inner mitochondrial membrane and is comprised of four main protein complexes and an ATP synthase. NADH and FADH2 pass electrons to these complexes, which pump protons into the intermembrane space. This distribution of...

The theoretical yield of a reaction is the amount of product estimated to form based on the stoichiometry of the balanced chemical equation. The theoretical yield assumes the complete conversion of the limiting reactant into the desired product. The amount of product that is obtained by performing the reaction is called the actual yield, and it may be less than or (very rarely) equal to the theoretical yield. Percent Yield In the case of chemical reactions, the actual yield of the product is...

The isolation of neonatal rat cardiomyocytes is a time consuming and unpredictable procedure. This study describes methods for cryopreservation and thawing of neonatal rat cardiomyocytes that allows for more efficient use of cells. The thawed NRCMs can be used for various experiments without the need for performing isolations each time.

Primary mouse cardiomyocyte cultures are one of the pivotal tools for the investigation of myofibrillar organization and function. The following protocol describes the isolation and culture of primary cardiomyocytes from neonatal mouse hearts. The resulting cardiomyocyte cultures may be subsequently used for a variety of biomechanical, biochemical and cell-biological assays.
