Chemical Drying Methods

Chemical drying methods are techniques that remove water from materials through chemical interactions, helping control moisture when physical evaporation alone is insufficient. They typically use desiccants, such as silica gel or anhydrous salts, that adsorb or absorb water and reduce its activity around a biological sample, promoting dehydration under controlled conditions. In biology, these methods support the preservation, preparation, and storage of specimens, tissues, and laboratory materials by limiting moisture-dependent degradation and microbial growth. Selecting the appropriate drying agent and exposure conditions is essential because excessive dehydration or chemical contact can alter cellular structure, biomolecules, or downstream experimental results.

Methods of Sterilization II: Chemical Methods

2023

In healthcare, the chemical method of sterilization uses chemical sterilants to treat surgical instruments and medical supplies to help prevent the transmission of infectious pathogens to patients. Due to heat sensitivity, most medical supplies and equipment should not be exposed to high temperatures. These parts include rubber, plastic, glass, and other similar elements. Using chemical sterilization rather than heat to clean out equipment is recommended. It eradicates and removes all bacteria,...
