Chemical Fume Hood

A chemical fume hood is a ventilated laboratory enclosure that captures and exhausts hazardous chemical vapors, gases, and aerosols, helping reduce inhalation exposure during experimental work. Its exhaust fan draws room air through the front opening, while the lowered sash and unobstructed airflow help contain contaminants and direct them away from the user; proper sash position and airflow checks are essential for effective operation. In biology laboratories, fume hoods support procedures involving volatile solvents, fixatives, stains, and other hazardous reagents, enabling safer sample preparation and chemical handling while protecting laboratory personnel and maintaining controlled working conditions.

Fume Hoods and Laminar Flow Cabinets

2023

Robert M. Rioux & William A. Elliott, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Fume hoods and laminar flow cabinets are engineering controls that operate under similar principles. Both use a constant flow of air to prevent contamination of the laboratory environment and its inhabitants. Fume hoods prevent hazardous substances from exiting the hood workspace, whereas laminar flow cabinets prevent contaminants from entering the cabinet workspace. Fume hoods are ventilation systems...

An Introduction to Working in the Hood

2023

Hoods are a common class of instrument, which act as a protective enclosure for various types of laboratory experiments. They serve to shield experimental samples from the environment, as well as to protect the researcher from hazardous or infectious samples. “The Hood” is a term that can include laminar flow benches, fume hoods, as well as tissue culture hoods or biosafety cabinets. All hoods operate based on the principle of laminar flow and have the same basic components, including a...

2020

A chemical formula presents information about the proportions of atoms constituting a particular chemical compound or molecule, mainly using symbols of elements and numbers. At times other symbols, such as dashes, parentheses, brackets, commas, plus, and minus signs, are also used. A chemical formula can be one of three types – molecular, empirical, and structural. Molecular Formula The molecular formula represents a molecule or a chemical compound using chemical symbols (to indicate the...

Chemical Drying: Biological Sample Preparation for Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)

2023

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is a powerful tool to image—primarily—the surface features of a biological sample. Proper sample preparation, however, is critical to obtaining quality images. This video focuses on the dehydration and drying steps of preparing intact adult Drosophila for SEM.
