Co-culture Model

A co-culture model is an experimental system in which two or more distinct cell types, tissues, or microorganisms are maintained together to study their interactions under controlled conditions. By sharing a culture environment, the participating populations can communicate through direct contact or secreted factors, allowing researchers to examine how signals, nutrients, and physical interactions influence cellular behavior. In biology, co-culture models help represent aspects of complex tissues and microbial communities more realistically than single-population cultures. They support research on cell development, immune responses, host-microbe relationships, disease mechanisms, and drug effects, while providing a controlled platform for investigating interdependent biological processes.

Esophageal 3D Raft Culture Model: An In Vitro Culture Technique to Generate Human Esophageal Mucosa Model

2023

This video describes an in vitro culture technique to generate human organotypic esophageal constructs by co-culturing primary human esophageal fibroblast and squamous epithelial cells within a decellularized porcine scaffold. These 3D culture models mimic the function and physiology of their in vivo tissue counterparts.

A Cell Culture Model of Resistance Arteries

A cell culture model of resistance arteries is described, allowing for the dissection of signaling pathways in endothelium, smooth muscle, or between endothelium and smooth muscle (the myoendothelial junction). The selective application of agonists or protein isolation, electron microscopy, or immunofluorescence can be utilized using this cell culture model.

A Three-Dimensional Co-culture Model of Infiltrating T Cells in Tumor Spheroids

2025

This video demonstrates a method to establish a three-dimensional tumor spheroid and T cell co-culture. An agarose cast with microwells containing tumor spheroids is prepared, followed by the addition of T cells. After incubation, this setup allows studying the interaction of T cells with tumor spheroids in a controlled three-dimensional environment.

Rotating Cell Culture Systems for Human Cell Culture: Human Trophoblast Cells as a Model

Traditional, two dimensional cell culture techniques often result in altered characteristics with respect to differentiation markers, cytokines and growth factors. Three-dimensional cell culture in the rotating cell culture system (RCCS) reestablishes expression of many of these factors as shown here with an extravillous trophoblast cell line.

Establishing a Brain Tumor in an Organotypic Slice Co-culture Model
