Corrugator Supercilii

The corrugator supercilii is a paired facial expression muscle that shapes eyebrow movement and contributes to nonverbal communication. Located near the medial eyebrow, it contracts when motor neurons activate its muscle fibers, pulling the eyebrow medially and downward and producing vertical glabellar skin folds associated with frowning or concentration. In biology, studying this muscle helps explain facial anatomy, skeletal muscle function, and the neural control of expression. Its structure and activity also have clinical relevance in evaluating facial nerve function and understanding procedures that alter glabellar movement, including targeted botulinum toxin treatment.

This protocol describes the study of the quasi-static compression performance of corrugated tapered tubes using finite element simulations. The influence of the thickness gradient on the compression performance was investigated. The results show that proper thickness gradient design can change the deformation mode and significantly improve the energy absorption performance of the tubes.

A Low Mortality Rat Model to Assess Delayed Cerebral Vasospasm After Experimental Subarachnoid Hemorrhage

Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is bleeding that occurs into the subarachnoid space when an aneurysm ruptures. While the morbidity and mortality from this event has been on a decline due to improved treatment approaches, the risk of vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage continues to be the same as it was several years ago. The importance of establishing a comprehensive and reproducible animal model to identify initiating events of cerebral vasospasm has been the focus of research...

We discuss the construction and operation of a complex nonlinear optical system that uses ultrafast all-optical switching to isolate Raman from fluorescence signals. Using this system we are able to successfully separate Raman and fluorescence signals utilizing pulse energies and average powers that remain biologically safe.
