Cutin Characterization

Cutin characterization is the analysis of cutin, a durable, lipid-based polyester that forms a protective layer in the plant cuticle and helps regulate water loss and interactions with the environment. Researchers examine its structure and composition through methods such as chemical depolymerization, solvent extraction, spectroscopy, chromatography, and microscopy, which reveal hydroxy fatty acids, polymer organization, and surface properties. In biology, these measurements clarify how plant cuticles develop and function, including their roles in preventing dehydration, limiting pathogen entry, and influencing chemical transport. Cutin characterization also supports studies of plant stress responses, crop resilience, and the design of bio-based materials.

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. The objective of this experiment is to achieve hands-on experience with different magnetic components from design and material perspectives. This experiment covers B-H curves of magnetic material and inductor design through identifying unknown design factors. The B-H curve of a magnetic element, such as an inductor or transformer, is a characteristic of the magnetic material forming the core around...
