Diet Manipulation

Diet manipulation is the deliberate alteration of food composition, quantity, timing, or nutrient availability to examine how nutrition affects living systems. By changing factors such as macronutrient balance, calorie intake, feeding schedules, or individual nutrients, researchers can modify energy balance, metabolic pathways, hormonal signaling, and interactions between an organism and its gut microbes. In biology, controlled diet manipulation helps investigate relationships between nutrition and growth, physiology, behavior, disease, and lifespan. Carefully standardized diets and experimental controls allow researchers to distinguish dietary effects from genetic, environmental, or other biological influences.

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment as a Useful Adjunctive Tool for Pneumonia

Cited by 50 •

2014

Pneumonia is one of the top ten leading causes of death in the U.S. Osteopathic manipulative techniques (OMT) may be utilized as an adjunctive therapy in the treatment of pneumonia to enhance biomechanical and immune function; and ultimately, to reduce hospital stay, duration of antibiotics, incidence of respiratory failure, and mortality. In this video-article, we will review randomized controlled studies on the use of OMT in pneumonia patients, as well as demonstrate specific hands-on...

This is a high fat diet feeding protocol to induce obesity in Drosophila, a model for understanding fundamental molecular mechanisms implicated in lipotoxicity. It also provides a high throughput triacylglyceride assay for measuring fat accumulation in Drosophila and potentially other (insect) models under various dietary, environmental, genetic or physiological conditions.

Palatable Western-style Cafeteria Diet as a Reliable Method for Modeling Diet-induced Obesity in Rodents

This protocol describes the use of a highly palatable, western-style cafeteria diet to model overeating and obesity in rodents. Here, we provide a detailed outline of food selection, preparation and measurement, and explain methodological factors that assist in generating a robust and reproducible phenotype.

Experimental Manipulation of Body Size to Estimate Morphological Scaling Relationships in Drosophila

Cited by 29 •

2011

Morphological scaling relationships capture and describe organismal shape. We present a method to measure morphological scaling relationships across the natural range of body sizes in fully metamorphic insects. Using a simple diet manipulation we increase the distribution of trait sizes, permitting the accurate description of how shape and size co-vary.
