Duodenal Aspirate

Duodenal aspirate is a sample of fluid and suspended material collected from the duodenum, the first segment of the small intestine, for biological and clinical analysis. During collection, an endoscope or nasoduodenal tube is positioned in the duodenum, and gentle suction retrieves intestinal contents while minimizing contamination from the mouth and stomach. The specimen can be examined microscopically, cultured, or analyzed molecularly to investigate intestinal microorganisms, parasitic infections, bile, digestive secretions, and nutrient-processing processes. As a research method, duodenal aspiration provides direct information about the small-intestinal environment and supports studies of gastrointestinal physiology, host-microbe interactions, and disease mechanisms.
