Edge Effects

Edge effects are the ecological changes that occur where two different habitats meet, creating conditions that differ from those in either habitat’s interior. At these boundaries, altered light, temperature, humidity, wind, vegetation structure, and resource availability can change species interactions, movement, and population densities; predators and invasive species may also penetrate fragmented habitats more easily. In biology, studying edge effects helps researchers assess habitat fragmentation, biodiversity patterns, and ecosystem function. This concept guides wildlife-corridor design, protected-area management, and conservation planning by identifying when habitat boundaries support increased diversity and when they threaten sensitive interior species.

Flow Visualization in a Water Tunnel: Observing the Leading-edge Vortex Over a Delta Wing

2023

Source: Jose Roberto Moreto, Gustaaf Jacobs and Xiaofeng Liu, Department of Aerospace Engineering, San Diego State University, San Diego, California The delta wing, shown in Figure 1D, is a popular design in high-speed airplanes due to its superb performance in transonic and supersonic flight regimes. This type of wing has a small aspect ratio and high sweep angle, which reduces drag at high subsonic, transonic and supersonic flight regimes. The aspect ratio is defined as the wing span divided...

In this protocol, we present the experimental procedures of a cell spreading assay that is based on live-cell microscopy. We provide an open-source computational tool for the unbiased segmentation of fluorescently labeled cells and quantitative analysis of lamellipodia dynamics during cell spreading.

Buffer Effectiveness

Buffer solutions do not have an unlimited capacity to keep the pH relatively constant . Instead, the ability of a buffer solution to resist changes in pH relies on the presence of appreciable amounts of its conjugate weak acid-base pair. When enough strong acid or base is added to substantially lower the concentration of either member of the buffer pair, the buffering action within the solution is compromised. The buffer capacity is the amount of acid or base that can be added to a given volume...
