Crop Improvement

Crop improvement is the deliberate development of crop varieties with better yields, quality, resilience, or adaptation to local growing conditions. It works by identifying useful genetic variation and combining or selecting favorable traits through breeding, including controlled crosses, selection of offspring, and increasingly, molecular markers that help track genes linked to traits such as disease resistance or drought tolerance. In biology and agriculture, these approaches support food security by producing crops that use resources efficiently and withstand environmental stresses, while preserving valuable diversity for future breeding and helping researchers understand how genes and environments shape plant performance.

We present a fast and reliable method to quantify vitamin C in Lactuca spp. using UPLC-UV, potentially transferable to other plants. The key steps are the sample preparation and vitamin C extraction under stable conditions, the reduction of dehydroascorbic acid to ascorbic acid and the optimization of the chromatographic procedure.
