Electroretinogram Recording

Electroretinogram recording is a method for measuring the retina’s electrical response to light, providing an objective assessment of retinal function in biology and vision research. During the procedure, electrodes placed on or near the eye detect voltage changes generated as photoreceptors and downstream retinal neurons respond to controlled flashes or patterns of light, producing waveforms such as the a-wave and b-wave. Researchers and clinicians use these recordings to evaluate visual physiology, identify retinal dysfunction, and characterize inherited or acquired eye disorders. The technique also supports studies of retinal development, drug effects, and emerging treatments that aim to restore or preserve vision.

Recording of Electroretinogram and Visual Evoked Potential in a Rat

2025

This video demonstrates how to record electroretinogram (ERG) and visual evoked potential (VEP) in a conscious rat. The rat, with surgically implanted electrodes, is first dark-adapted. After applying dilating drops, the animal is placed in a restrainer and positioned in a Ganzfeld bowl. The ERG and VEP signals are then recorded.

Multifocal Electroretinograms

The development of the multifocal electroretinogram (mfERG) is an important advance in the diagnosis and characterization of retinopathy. Multifocal electroretinograms are a mathematical average of an approximation of a b-wave. Software programs can derive ERGs from more than a hundred retinal areas in a few minutes per eye. Scotomas and retinal dysfunction can be mapped and quantified.

Direct-Coupled Electroretinogram Recording of the Retinal Pigment Epithelium in a Mouse

2025

This video demonstrates the recording of a direct-coupled electroretinogram (DC-ERG) on a dark-adapted, anesthetized mouse retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). After applying dilating drops, the animal is placed in a recording setup, and the capillary electrode filled with a salt buffer is placed on the cornea. After establishing the baseline, DC-ERG is recorded.

We show surgical implantation and Recording procedures to measure visual electrophysiological signals from the eye (electroretinogram) and brain (visual evoked potential) in conscious rats, which is more analogous to the human condition where recordings are conducted without anesthesia confounds.

Here, we present a protocol that simplifies the measurement of light evoked electroretinogram responses from larval zebrafish. A novel cone-shaped sponge-tip electrode can help to make the study of visual development in larval zebrafish using the electroretinogram ERG easier to achieve with reliable outcomes and lower cost.
