Embolic Stroke

Embolic stroke is an ischemic stroke caused by a traveling embolus that blocks an artery supplying the brain, making it an important example of how circulatory events can produce sudden neurological injury. The embolus often forms elsewhere, such as in the heart during atrial fibrillation, then moves through the bloodstream until it becomes lodged in a cerebral vessel, restricting oxygen and glucose delivery and damaging downstream tissue. Symptoms typically begin abruptly and may include weakness, speech difficulty, or vision loss, while clinical evaluation and brain imaging help distinguish the event from other stroke types. Understanding this mechanism supports urgent reperfusion treatment, investigation of the embolus source, and prevention of recurrence through targeted cardiovascular care.

In this paper, we demonstrate a standard method for producing an embolic middle cerebral artery occlusion with homologous blood clots (fibrin-rich) in adult rat. This model closely mimics human ischemic stroke and is suitable for preclinical study of thrombolytic therapy for ischemic stroke.

Combination of High Ligation and Intraoperative Embolization Using Polidocanol for Treatment of Varicoceles

2023

To reduce the postoperative recurrence rate of varicocelectomy, we combined high ligation of varicocele with intraoperative embolization. We injected polidocanol from the spermatic vein during surgery to embolize the branches of the spermatic vein and collateral veins. This is an alternative surgical method for the treatment of varicocele.

Pulmonary Embolism I: Introduction

2025

Pulmonary embolism (PE) occurs when a thrombus, fat or air embolus, amniotic fluid, or tumor tissue blocks one or more pulmonary arteries. These blockages originate in the venous system or the right side of the heart.EtiologyPE primarily arises from deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and other hypercoagulable states, such as inherited thrombophilias. Additional etiological factors include venous stasis, commonly seen in obesity, and endothelial injury from surgery and trauma. Less common causes include...

A blood clot, or thrombus, is a semi-solid mass composed of fibrin, platelets, and red blood cells. When it forms within a vessel, it can obstruct blood flow, known as thrombosis. If part of the clot detaches, it becomes an embolus that can travel and block distant vessels. When this occurs in the pulmonary arteries, it causes a condition known as pulmonary embolism (PE).Origin and ImpactMost often, the embolus originates from a thrombus in the deep veins of the lower limbs, a condition called...
