Nerve Damage

Nerve damage is injury or dysfunction affecting neurons, axons, myelin, or supporting tissues, disrupting communication between the nervous system, brain, spinal cord, and body. It can impair signal transmission when axons are severed, myelin is degraded, or inflammation and cell death alter nerve structure; peripheral nerves may sometimes regenerate, whereas damage in the central nervous system often has limited repair. Biological study of nerve damage examines causes, cellular responses, sensory and motor deficits, and mechanisms of degeneration and regeneration. This knowledge supports neurological diagnosis, rehabilitation, protective therapies, and research into neural repair and tissue engineering.

Calcium is a ubiquitous messenger in the nervous system, essential for triggering neurotransmitter release and changes in synaptic strength. Here we demonstrate a technique for loading Ca2+-indicators into Drosophila nerve terminals. We also demonstrate fabrication of the required apparatus and emphasize points critical for the technique's success.

Toluidine Blue Staining of Peripheral Nerve Sections: A Technique to Stain Myelinated Nerve Fibers For Peripheral Nerve Structure Visualization

This video demonstrates the staining technique of resin-embedded, osmium tetroxide-treated rat peripheral nerve sections using toluidine blue. The stained nerve sections help visualize the fine structures of peripheral nerves.

Vagus Nerve Stimulation via Chronically Implanted Peripheral Nerve Cuff Electrodes in Rats

Source: Sanchez, C. A., et al. Preparation of Peripheral Nerve Stimulation Electrodes for Chronic Implantation in Rats. J. Vis. Exp. (2020).This video demonstrates vagus nerve stimulation in an awake rat. A rat with an implanted chronic peripheral nerve cuff electrode and trained in a lever press task is connected to a stimulus generator via an implanted head cap. The vagus nerve is stimulated immediately after each successful lever press, resulting in the expansion of the motor map.
