Embryo Manipulation

Embryo manipulation is the deliberate handling or alteration of an early embryo to study development, produce genetically defined organisms, or support assisted reproduction. In laboratory settings, researchers work with embryos under controlled culture conditions and use microsurgical or micromanipulation tools to remove, transfer, inject, split, or otherwise modify cells, tissues, or genetic material at defined developmental stages. These procedures can reveal how cell lineages, signaling pathways, and embryonic patterning shape development. They also support transgenic animal production, cloning research, fertility treatments, and embryo-based models of disease, while requiring careful attention to viability, developmental timing, and ethical oversight.

2014

Pneumonia is one of the top ten leading causes of death in the U.S. Osteopathic manipulative techniques (OMT) may be utilized as an adjunctive therapy in the treatment of pneumonia to enhance biomechanical and immune function; and ultimately, to reduce hospital stay, duration of antibiotics, incidence of respiratory failure, and mortality. In this video-article, we will review randomized controlled studies on the use of OMT in pneumonia patients, as well as demonstrate specific hands-on...

Typical microtubule inhibitors, used widely in basic and applied research, have far-reaching effects on cells. Recently, photostatins emerged as a class of photoswitchable microtubule inhibitors, capable of instantaneous, reversible, spatiotemporally precise manipulation of microtubules. This step-by-step protocol details the application of photostatins in a 3D live preimplantation mouse embryo.

Zebrafish Breeding and Embryo Handling

2023

Zebrafish (Danio rerio) are an important model organism that is particularly valuable for research in developmental biology. Zebrafish are extremely fertile and can produce hundreds of progeny per week, so it is relatively easy to collect a large number of embryos for high sample numbers. Furthermore, zebrafish undergo rapid development and embryos are transparent, allowing for easy visualization of developmental processes. This video covers the steps required for the collection of newly...
