Ethanol Dehydration

Ethanol dehydration is a chemical process that removes water from ethanol or uses ethanol to remove water from biological materials, with the precise meaning determined by context. In the reaction sense, concentrated sulfuric acid and heat promote elimination of hydroxyl and hydrogen from adjacent carbon atoms, producing ethene and water. In biological research, graded ethanol solutions dehydrate tissues and cells by progressively replacing water before paraffin embedding or imaging, helping preserve structure and improve sectioning; however, excessive exposure can cause shrinkage and distortion. Understanding the mechanism and conditions allows researchers to control sample preparation and distinguish a laboratory dehydration step from a chemical conversion.

Microdialysis of Ethanol During Operant Ethanol Self-administration and Ethanol Determination by Gas Chromatography

2012

A method to determine the time course of ethanol concentration in the brains of rats during operant ethanol self-administration is described. Gas chromatography with flame ionization detection is used to quantify ethanol in the dialysate samples, because it has the sensitivity required for the small volumes that are generated.

Dehydration Synthesis

2026

Dehydration synthesis (also called a condensation reaction) is the chemical process in which two molecules covalently link together to form a new molecule, along with the release of a water molecule. Many physiologically important compounds form by dehydration synthesis reactions, such as complex carbohydrates, proteins, DNA, and RNA.Synthesis of carbohydratesSugar molecules are covalently linked together by dehydration synthesis. During the reaction, the hydroxyl (-OH) group from one reactant...

Acid-Catalyzed Dehydration of Alcohols to Alkenes

2025

In a dehydration reaction, a hydroxyl group in an alcohol is eliminated along with the hydrogen from an adjacent carbon. Here, the products are an alkene and a molecule of water. Dehydration of alcohols is generally achieved by heating in the presence of an acid catalyst. While the dehydration of primary alcohols requires high temperatures and acid concentrations, secondary and tertiary alcohols can lose a water molecule under relatively mild conditions. The acid-catalyzed dehydration of...

Biofuels: Producing Ethanol from Cellulosic Material

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University In this experiment, cellulosic material (such as corn stalks, leaves, grasses, etc.) will be used as a feedstock for the production of ethanol. The cellulosic material is first pretreated (ground and heated), digested with enzymes, and then fermented with yeast. Ethanol production is monitored using an ethanol probe. The experiment can be extended to optimize ethanol production by varying the feedstock used,...
