Extradural Approach

The extradural approach is a surgical technique that reaches structures outside the dura mater, the tough membrane surrounding the brain and spinal cord, while preserving this protective layer. Surgeons create a working corridor within the extradural space by separating tissues along anatomical planes and controlling bleeding from vessels in the surrounding membranes and bone. In neuroanatomy and clinical biology, this approach supports access to selected regions of the skull base, spine, and peripheral nerve pathways without intentionally entering the subdural or subarachnoid spaces. Its anatomical precision helps researchers and clinicians study spatial relationships and plan procedures that limit direct manipulation of neural tissue.
