Eyeball Isolation

Eyeball isolation is a biological dissection technique that separates an intact eye from surrounding orbital tissues while preserving its major structures for study. The procedure uses careful removal of connective tissue and severing of the extraocular muscles and optic nerve, with controlled handling to maintain the globe, cornea, lens, and retina. Isolated eyes provide accessible specimens for examining ocular anatomy, tissue organization, developmental changes, and disease-related damage through dissection, imaging, or histological analysis. In teaching and research, the method supports direct investigation of visual-system structure and helps prepare eye tissues for applications such as microscopy, biomaterial testing, and ophthalmic studies.

The eye is a spherical, hollow structure composed of three tissue layers. The outer layer — the fibrous tunic, comprises the sclera — a white structure — and the cornea, which is transparent. The sclera encompasses some of the ocular surface, most of which is not visible. However, the 'white of the eye' is distinctively visible in humans compared to other species. The cornea, a clear covering at the front of the eye, enables light penetration. The eye's middle layer, the vascular tunic,...
