Field Testing

Field testing is the evaluation of biological organisms, samples, or ecological conditions outside a controlled laboratory, where measurements reflect real-world environments. Researchers collect samples or record observations at study sites, then use standardized protocols, portable instruments, and defined controls to measure variables such as species presence, behavior, physiology, or environmental quality. In biology, field testing supports biodiversity surveys, disease surveillance, conservation planning, and ecological monitoring by revealing how organisms respond to natural variation and environmental stressors. Comparing field results across locations or with laboratory findings helps assess ecological relevance, identify biological change, and guide management or public-health decisions.

The Controlled Odor Mimic Permeation System is a simple, field-portable, low-cost method of odor delivery for olfactory testing and training. It is constructed of an odorant retained on an adsorbent material and contained inside of a permeable polymer bag allowing controlled release of the odorant vapor over time.

Patients with visual deficits after stroke report about different constraints in daily life most likely due to variable compensatory strategies, which are difficult to differentiate in clinical routine. We present a clinical set-up which allows measurement of different compensatory head- and eye-movement-strategies and evaluating their effects on driving performance.

Anxiety Testing

2023

Anxiety is a commonly observed behavioral disorder that stems from fear. It is described as increased restlessness, or unpleasant feelings of fear over anticipated events. Experimenters often use rodent models to better understand anxiety disorders in humans. They use different paradigms, like exposing rodents to bright spaces or loud sounds, which are known to induce fear. These tests combined with other interventions such as surgery or drug-administration may assist researchers in pinpointing...

Microbial DNA Analysis in the Field Using a Biological Extraction Field Kit and a Field qPCR Unit

2026

Reliable and accurate forms of field-deployable DNA analysis are crucial for many industries. This paper offers two methods for environmental microbial analysis in the field: 1) the isolation of microbial DNA from environmental samples using a biological extraction field kit, and 2) the analysis of DNA via the field qPCR unit.

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA Wood is a ubiquitous material that has been used in construction from the earliest times. Wood is a renewable, sustainable material with great aesthetic value. Today, there are probably more buildings constructed with wood than any other structural material. Many of these buildings are singlefamily residences, but many larger apartment buildings, as well as commercial and industrial buildings,...
