Flow Rate Control

Flow rate control is the regulation of how quickly a fluid moves through a biological system, a process essential for delivering nutrients, removing waste, and maintaining stable conditions. It operates by adjusting driving pressure and resistance, often through changes in vessel diameter, valve position, pump activity, or channel geometry. In living organisms, neural and chemical feedback can alter vascular resistance to match tissue demands, while laboratory systems use pumps, regulators, and sensors to maintain defined flow rates. These principles support studies of circulation, perfusion, cell culture, microfluidics, and tissue engineering, where controlled flow influences transport, cell behavior, and experimental reproducibility.

Mass Conservation and Flow Rate Measurements

2023

Source: Ricardo Mejia-Alvarez and Hussam Hikmat Jabbar, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI The purpose of this experiment is to demonstrate the calibration of a flow passage as a flowmeter using a control volume (CV) formulation [1, 2]. The CV analysis focuses on the macroscopic effect of flow on engineering systems, rather than the detailed description that could be achieved with a detailed differential analysis. These two techniques should be...

Control of Power Flow

Renal Drug Excretion: Effect of Urine pH, Flow Rate, and Drug pKa

2025

The pH of urine, the drug's pKa, and the urine flow rate are vital parameters for drug reabsorption and excretion. Urinary pH varies between 4.6 and 8.0 and is influenced by diet, drug intake, and the patient's pathophysiology. It affects a drug's ionization state and reabsorption. For instance, carbohydrate-rich food produces alkaline urine promoting drug excretion, while proteins and certain medications like ascorbic acid lead to acidic urine enhancing reabsorption. The pKa of a drug,...
