Flow Rate Increase

Flow rate increase is the rise in the volume of fluid, gas, or particles moving past a given point per unit time, a measure central to transport in biological systems. In physiology, it can occur when a stronger pressure gradient drives movement or when resistance falls, such as when a blood vessel widens and permits more blood to pass. Measuring changes in flow rate helps researchers assess circulation, respiratory exchange, cellular nutrient delivery, and transport through experimental systems. These relationships connect pressure, resistance, and vessel diameter to biological function and can reveal how tissues respond to activity, disease, or treatment.

Increased pulse rate

2024

Tachycardia is a condition marked by an abnormally fast or irregular heart rate, surpassing the typical resting rate. In adults, tachycardia is characterized by a pulse rate ranging from 100 to 180 beats per minute. The increased heart rate can result in inadequate blood flow to various body parts, ultimately diminishing the oxygen supply to organs and tissues. Many factors can elevate the risk of developing tachycardia. These include advanced age, a family history of arrhythmias, and an...

Mass Conservation and Flow Rate Measurements

Source: Ricardo Mejia-Alvarez and Hussam Hikmat Jabbar, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI The purpose of this experiment is to demonstrate the calibration of a flow passage as a flowmeter using a control volume (CV) formulation [1, 2]. The CV analysis focuses on the macroscopic effect of flow on engineering systems, rather than the detailed description that could be achieved with a detailed differential analysis. These two techniques should be...

This video describes the rheotaxis assay in zebrafish. The method involves the measurement of orientation behavior of zebrafish in response to different water flow rates under the influence of different magnetic fields.

Increasing Pulmonary Artery Pulsatile Flow Improves Hypoxic Pulmonary Hypertension in Piglets

Pulmonary hypertension is associated with a significant reduction in pulmonary artery pulsatility, contractility and elasticity, contributing to an increase in pulmonary artery pressure and pulmonary resistance. Using a hypoxic piglet model, this study demonstrated that improving pulmonary artery plasticity using a newly developed pulsatile catheter improves hypoxic pulmonary hypertension.

Renal Drug Excretion: Effect of Urine pH, Flow Rate, and Drug pKa

The pH of urine, the drug's pKa, and the urine flow rate are vital parameters for drug reabsorption and excretion. Urinary pH varies between 4.6 and 8.0 and is influenced by diet, drug intake, and the patient's pathophysiology. It affects a drug's ionization state and reabsorption. For instance, carbohydrate-rich food produces alkaline urine promoting drug excretion, while proteins and certain medications like ascorbic acid lead to acidic urine enhancing reabsorption. The pKa of a drug,...
