Fluid Phase Uptake

Fluid phase uptake is a form of endocytosis in which cells internalize extracellular fluid and the dissolved molecules it contains, supporting nutrient acquisition, membrane turnover, and environmental sensing. The plasma membrane invaginates around nearby fluid, pinches off to form intracellular vesicles, and delivers their contents to early endosomes for sorting, recycling, or degradation. Unlike receptor-mediated endocytosis, this process is generally nonspecific and captures solutes in proportion to their concentration in the surrounding medium. In biology, measuring fluid phase uptake helps researchers assess endocytic activity, study membrane trafficking, and understand how cells regulate their interactions with the extracellular environment.

Phase Diagrams

2020

A phase diagram combines plots of pressure versus temperature for the liquid-gas, solid-liquid, and solid-gas phase-transition equilibria of a substance. These diagrams indicate the physical states that exist under specific conditions of pressure and temperature and also provide the pressure dependence of the phase-transition temperatures (melting points, sublimation points, boiling points). Regions or areas labeled solid, liquid, and gas represent single phases, while lines or curves represent...

Radiolabeled Amino Acid Uptake Assay to Quantify Cellular Uptake of Amino Acids

This video demonstrates an in vitro technique for estimating amino acid uptake by bone marrow-derived stromal cells. Na+-dependent amino acid transporters mediate the uptake of radiolabeled amino acids inside the cells, and the cellular uptake is estimated by measuring the radioactivity.

(2017)This video demonstrates competence-induced DNA uptake in Staphylococcus aureus through natural transformation. A chloramphenicol-sensitive strain engineered to constitutively express a sigma factor is cultured under nutrient-limiting conditions to enhance competence, then incubated with donor DNA carrying a resistance gene. Successful gene transfer is confirmed by the...
