Fraction Collector System

A fraction collector system is a laboratory instrument that gathers liquid emerging from a separation device into separate containers, preserving individual fractions for analysis or further processing. In biological workflows, it directs column effluent into tubes or wells according to a set volume, time interval, or detector signal, while a programmable arm or rotating rack positions each collection vessel. Researchers use fraction collector systems with chromatography and other liquid-phase separations to isolate proteins, nucleic acids, metabolites, or cellular components. By automating fraction handling, the system improves reproducibility, reduces sample loss, and supports downstream assays such as electrophoresis, spectroscopy, and biochemical characterization.

Automated HPLC Separation Using LC-Mate: An Integrated Repetitive Autosampler and Fraction Collector for Microscale Purification

2026

An integrated autosampler and fraction collector (LC-mate) was developed to automate repetitive HPLC separations. Compatible with HPLC detectors that output analog signals, LC-mate enhances the performance of manually operated systems and accelerates research workflows that depend on high-performance liquid chromatography.

Ribosomes play a central role in protein synthesis. Polyribosome (polysome) fractionation by sucrose density gradient centrifugation allows direct determination of translation efficiencies of individual mRNAs on a genome-wide scale. In addition, this method can be used for biochemical analysis of ribosome- and polysome-associated factors such as chaperones and signaling molecules.

Fractional Distillation

2023

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Nicholas Leadbeater — University of Connecticut Distillation is perhaps the most common laboratory technique employed by chemists for the purification of organic liquids. Compounds in a mixture with different boiling points separate into individual components when the mixture is carefully distilled. The two main types of distillation are "simple distillation" and "fractional distillation", and both are widely used in organic chemistry laboratories. Simple distillation...
